Description
- Abstract: This is the third annual report of a cooperative study between the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), the U.S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries (BCF), and the Oregon Fish Commission (OFC) to determine the offshore-inshore movement of Dover sole (Microstomns pacificus) and sablefish (Anaplopma fimbria) off the Columbia River. The original contract between the AEC and OFC was for the period of March 1, 1962, to February 28, 1963, and has since been renewed for two 12-month periods. Prior to the initiation of the contract, during the period June 1961 to March 1962, several hundred Dover sole were tagged and released by the Oregon Fish Commission, at their expense, in the study area southwest of the Columbia River. As these releases are in all respects comparable and complimentary to later releases paid for by the AEC, they have been included in the data and are considered part of this study. During the contract periods, several thousand additional fish have been tagged and released into this same area. The work was done by a full-time Fish Commission biologist, hired on funds made available through contract No. AT(45-1)1731, and release of tagged fish was from the BCF vessel, John N. Cobb, and BCF charted vessel, Commando. The tagging and recovery work during the period March 1 to September 15, 1962, was covered in Progress Report No. 1 and the period September 16, 1962, through September 30, 1963, in Progress Report No. 2, both entitled, Tagging Studies to Determine the Offshore-Inshore Exchange of Groundfish Off Oregon and Washington. This report will cover the period October 1, 1963, through September 30, 1964, and describe tagging work done, present recovery data, and give a preliminary analysis of the movement of recovered tagged fish.
