Description

Abstract: The Troll Salmon Management Program was established in 1967 as a joint state-federal activity and has been funded through the provisions of the Anadromous Fish Act (PL 89-304) since that time. Information obtained from this program is used to develop appropriate management options designed to achieve the wisest use of the ocean salmon resource. Effective February 15, 1974, the Troll Salmon Management Program was transferred from the Marine Section to the Columbia River and Ocean Salmon Section to facilitate better coordination of anadromous fish work. During 1974 the troll salmon work followed the basic format for past years. Two major activities were pursued. The first involved annually conducted work including the collection and compilation of catch statistics, chinook age composition, and mark and coded-wire tag data. The second was short-term work on subjects Including analysis of historic length frequency data, the compilation of all tag return data for ocean-tagged salmon, and joint work with the California Department of Fish and Game on a computer model for estimating yields from the ocean troll fishery for specific seasons and size limits.
