Description
Abstract: During the period December 1959 - November 1960, work in the field included the following activities: (1) interviews with otter trawl and pink shrimp fishermen from Astoria to Brookings; (2) sampling of landings of Dover sole and pink shrimp at Astoria, limited sampling of landings of petrale sole and pink shrimp at Coos Bay, and sampling landings of pink shrimp at Brookings; (3) sampling-at-sea trips on trawl boats out of Astoria and on shrimp boats out of Brookings; (4) participating in exploratory fishing for pink shrimp on the N.B. Scofield, operated by the California Department of Fish and Game, and the John N. Cobb, operated by the U.S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries; and (5) petrale sole tagging south of Heceta Bank on the chartered trawler Betty. Laboratory work consisted of: (1) an analysis of the landing records combined with interview data to obtain a catch per unit of effort index for Dover, English, and petrale soles and Pacific Ocean perch; (2) compiling landing records by month by area of catch for the Pacific Marine Fisheries Commission; (3) processing and analysis of the samples taken from landings of Dover sole, petrale sole, and pink shrimp; (4) analysis of the data obtained on the trawl and shrimp sampling-at-sea trips; (5) processing of tags recovered from the Dover sole tagged in the Willapa Deep in 1955, the English sole tagged in the Cape Lookout-Cascade Head area in 1959, and the petrale sole tagged south of Heceta Bank in 1960; and (6) the preparation of miscellaneous reports for presentation at meetings of the Research Division of the Fish Commission and the Pacific Marine Fisheries Commission.
