Description
Abstract: Realizing that the problems of conserving the salmon populations of the State were becoming more acute each year, the Oregon Fish Commission, in the fall of 1945, inaugurated comprehensive investigations in order to determine ways and means of preserving and increasing the salmon runs. As part of this program, preliminary studies were started on the troll salmon fisheries in 1946. In 1947, these studies were expanded. The average weights of both species of troll caught salmon were determined throughout the season from May to November at various ports along the Oregon coast. The length-weight relationships of the fish were studied and scale samples were taken from both Chinook and silver salmon. Also, while this work was being carried out, a large number of troll caught salmon were inspected for clipped fins. Following these studies, the Oregon Fish Commission adopted preliminary regulations for the troll fishery designed to protect the immature fish and profit from their fast growth during their ocean life. These regulations were briefly: A minimum size limit of 27 inches, total length, for Chinooks and a closed season for silver salmon from November 16 to July 1. These regulation became effective in 1948. In order to check the consistency of the findings of the 1947 studies, the sampling of the troll catches was continued in 1948. In addition a limited program of tagging troll caught salmon was undertaken in order to obtain some knowledge of the movements of the salmon in the ocean.
