Description
Abstract: The Ocean Salmon Management Program is responsible for collecting fishery and biological data from the commercial and recreational ocean salmon fisheries, and analyzing the data and recommending appropriate management regulations for these fisheries. Management regulations are designed to achieve the optimum sustained use of the salmon resources. In FY 1985 we sampled and analyzed data on catch and fishing effort, investigated chinook age composition, and recovered marked and coded-wire tagged salmon caught in offshore fisheries. Short-term activities included an evaluation of a troll season extension for chinook salmon off southern Oregon, the collection of random coho scales for a Research Section scale study to identify hatchery and wild coho, and the collection of chinook lengths from the recreational fishery to maintain an ongoing data base. We continued the key buyer calling of processors to estimate daily troll coho landings north and south of Cape Falcon. The key buyers represented about 90% of the total area landings. The sampling program for the ocean salmon fisheries is supervised by a program leader and 2 project leaders, one each for the troll and recreational fisheries. We sampled at 11 major ports along the coast utilizing 8 troll and 23 recreational samplers and 2 crew chiefs. The two crew chiefs acted as liaison between samplers and the project leaders in Newport and helped sample whenever necessary. They also brought the survey data and coded wire tags to Newport each week. Three seasonal employees helped Newport staff edit, keypunch, and computer process the sampled data. Sampling program activities for 1985 were reduced by not using a central coast crew chief and not sampling commercial landings at Pacific City and Depoe Bay. These reductions were implemented because of the limited commercial coho fishery south of Cape Falcon. Normally, coho predominate in the landings at both Pacific City and Depoe Bay, and with a limited fishery, sampling was not justified. Funding of the ocean sampling program came from two sources: (1) Anadromous Fisheries Act 89-304 (Project Number AFC-13O-1) and (2) Bonneville Power Administration-Pacific Marine Fisheries Commission (Contract Numbers 85-014 o.nd ~4-00 Ha).
