Description
- Abstract: The Burnt River headwaters are found along the southwestern Baker County line. The North, South, and Middle Forks join at Unity Reservoir about five miles north of the town of Unity. Below Unity Dam, the river makes its way through the Burnt River Valley. The 63.5 miles of the main river below Unity Dam is heavily infested with rough fish. To produce a good fishery, the river would need rehabilitation that would include: 1) Chemical treatment of the river and tributaries to remove the rough fish population. 2) Reintroduction of suitable fish species. 3) Construction of a barrier at downstream end to prevent
upstream migration of rough fish from lower impoundments; e.g., Brownlee Reservoir. With the removal of rough fish, trout and warm-water game fish could be established and would produce good angling.
At present, the trout fishery is confined to Unity Reservoir and the area directly below the dam. Trout angling on the forks of the system is limited and restricted to the early spring. Warm-water game fish are taken in the lower river in early spring.
