Abstract: Virtual population analysis (VPA) and survey estimates of female English sole abundance were used to reconstruct the stock biomass history from 1966- 1985, in the INPFC Columbia and Vancouver areas. Average biomass over the 20 year period ranged from 5,702 to 6,780 mt for VPA estimates and averaged 10,951 mt for survey based estimates. For 1985 both methods produced estimates of biomass ranging from 3,030 to 5,634 mt. Reduced abundance in recent years was attributed to the lack of strong recruitment. VPA estimates of age 5 recruits suggest that recruitment has been below average for the past three years.
