Description
- Abstract: Red sea urchins (STRONGYLOCENTROTUS FRANCISCANUS) have been harvested
commercially in California since the early 1970's. Interest in an Oregon
fishery has slowly developed. In 1984, an economic viability study by an
Oregon State University (OSU) researcher (Washburn 1984) generated interest in
harvest. We issued two permits in 1984 to commercially harvest sea urchins,
but no harvesting was done. With the major sea urchin distributors located in
southern California, it was difficult for Oregon fishermen to market their
catch. When the California sea urchin fishery expanded into northern
California in 1986, the necessary market connections became close enough to
stimulate the start of an Oregon fishery.
This report is a review of the commercial sea urchin fishery in Oregon
from 1986 to 1988. It includes a summary of fishing activity (landings and
effort), regulations, and logbook and market sample data collected by the
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW).
