Abstract: These reports are being produced to provide a handy record of fishery information for industry, biologists, and other interested persons. Greatly improved response from processors and dealers and our own capability to process the data have made it possible to report the information more accurately and timely. This report includes 14 years of data to reduce costs of printing. Catch, number of boats, number of trips and price data are from fish tickets which were edited for accuracy. Crab size and grade were obtained from samples taken at fish plants and at sea aboard commercial vessels. Similar data were obtained from the commercial bay fishery and is reported separately. The number of pots was calculated by asking fishermen how many pots they fished, obtaining an average number of pots per boat for each port, then applying that average to the number of boats in each port. In 1987 hold inspections were implemented and fishermen were asked how many pots they planned to fish that year. Pot data are primarily used to show trends in fishing effort. Field sampling was concentrated during the first three to five months of the season at the main ports of Astoria, Newport, Coos Bay and Brookings. Historic catch and effort data and criteria for crab grade are shown in Appendices A and B, respectively.
