Description
- Abstract: This report summarizes the fifth year of research conducted by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Marine Mammal Program on pinniped predation on salmonids at the Alsea Estuary. Background and motivation for this research is described in Riemer et al. (2001). Our objective in 2002 was to complete our assessment of whether pinnipeds posed a threat to the recovery of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) in the basin. We carried out this assessment using three
approaches: (1) predation observations to estimate total diurnal adult salmonid predation by Pacific harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardsi); (2) marking and tracking of harbor seals to characterize their movements, habitat use and foraging behavior; and (3) collection of harbor seal fecal (scat) samples to describe their diet.
