Abstract: When the state of Oregon began a process to establish a limited system of marine reserves within state territorial waters in 2008, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) was designated the lead agency responsible for implementing and managing the system. ODFW oversees the five marine reserve sites at Cape Falcon, Cascade Head, Otter Rock, Cape Perpetua, and Redfish Rocks. The goals of the Oregon Marine Reserve system are: Conservation - Conserve marine habitats and biodiversity. Research - Serve as scientific reference sites to investigate marine reserve protections and the Oregon territorial seas, to inform nearshore ocean management. Communities - Avoid significant adverse impacts to ocean users and coastal communities. To achieve these goals, ODFW established a program in 2009 for marine reserves implementation and monitoring. In this context, the Marine Reserves Human Dimensions Monitoring Program conducts studies to determine the direct and indirect social, cultural, and economic impacts which result from reserve site implementation. The information collected through this process should be relevant to other marine and coastal natural resource policy issues in Oregon. This paper reviews a study conducted to identify baseline information about existing knowledge of and attitudes about the marine reserves among Oregon coastal visitors. Tourism constitutes a substantial proportion of the economy of many coastal communities in Oregon. How the reserve system may impact coastal visitation can have significant implications for the economies of Oregon coastal communities.
