Description
- Abstract: The implementation of the Oregon Marine Reserves Program and the Territorial Sea Plan update for ocean renewable energy both triggered extensive social science research about Oregon’s coastal and marine resources. Research efforts in coastal and valley communities have provided new insights on the social dimensions of ocean and coastal management decisions and several previous studies have expanded our understanding of human dimensions of marine resources. To date there has been little statewide examination of the geography of Oregonians’ priorities and perceptions of marine resources.
In order to fill the data gap of perceptions, priorities and values of Oregon residents statewide, we implemented and analyzed a participatory geographic information system (PPGIS) mapping exercise designed to capture where Oregonians use and value coastal and marine resources. Our goals were to:
1. Measure the values Oregonians hold for Oregon’s coastal and marine ecosystems.
2. Assemble a spatially explicit baseline dataset on Oregonian’s coastal values.
3. Identify the suite of coastal and marine ecosystem services and other values that Oregonians prioritize from areas now included in the marine reserves system.
