Description
- Abstract: The major aim of this statistical bulletin is to provide a ready source of information concerning the productivity of the commercial fisheries of the State of Oregon. Need for such material is constantly arising in connection with research and planning operations in fisheries management and economics, as well as for a variety of other uses. Time and resources have not permitted an exhaustive compilation of all of the catch records that exist for the earlier years. Many are not readily available, and their reliability is often questionable. Hence, with the exception of the river fisheries, only the statistics from 1928 to 1949 are presented. For the Columbia River fisheries, the records (from Craig and Hacker, 1940) are fairly complete; the coastal rivers are covered from 1923 to 1949 and the troll fishery data begin with 1925. This constitutes an important omission for the first 30 years on the coastal rivers, and for about one-half that period in the troll fishery. The marine fisheries were relatively minor prior to 1928. The accumulation of catch data is being continued. Future publications of this nature will contain both earlier and later records than are presented at this time. The joint efforts of a number of persons have been required to assemble the material. Harrison S. Smith, auditor for the Fish Commission, collected and compiled the basic data for the Oregon fisheries except for the instances where other sources are credited. Individuals of the Division of Research prepared the first drafts of the tables, text and figures for the fisheries with which they are most concerned. The following staff members contributed directly or indirectly in this manner: A. D. Bajkov, M. D. Collins, G. Y. Harry, Jr., K. A. Henry, R. T. Heg, J. I. Hodges, E. K. Holmberg, D. R. Johnson, L. D. Marriage, C. R. Mattson, D. L. McKernan, T. R. Merrell, A. R. Morgan, A. T. Pruter, R. L. Rulifson, R. W. Schoning, R. Tollefson, J. M. Van Hyning, S. J. Westrheim, S. N. Wilkes, R. A. Willis and C. E. Woelke. The State of Washington Department of Fisheries made a special compilation of the Columbia River salmon, shad, and sturgeon landings in that state for the years 1938 to 1949.
