Description
Abstract: The Ocean Salmon Management Program is responsible for collecting fishery and biological data from the commercial and recreational ocean salmon fisheries, analyzing the data, and recommending appropriate management regulations for these fisheries. Management regulations are designed to achieve the optimum sustained use of the salmon resources. In FY 1989 we sampled and analyzed data on catch and fishing effort, collected average weight data from commercial landings, investigated chinook age composition, and recovered coded-wire tagged salmon caught in offshore fisheries. Other activities included evaluating a troll season extension for chinook salmon off southern Oregon, collecting coho scales from coded-wire tagged fish for a reference collection of hatchery coho scales, and starting an at sea study to evaluate coho bycatch and hooking mortality in the May and June troll fishery in the Coos Bay area. We continued the program of telephoning "key buyer" processors to estimate daily troll coho landings and to monitor the chinook quotas north of Cape Falcon and south of Cape Blanco. The key buyers represented about 90% of the total area landings. We sampled at 10 major ports along the coast utilizing 8 troll, 17 recreational, 3 combination samplers and 2 crew chiefs. Several samplers were shifted from one _port to another for short periods of time as extra sampling was needed. Two permanent crew chiefs acted as liaison between the seasonal samplers and the project leader in Newport and helped sample when necessary. They also brought the survey data and coded wire tags to Newport each week. Three seasonal employees helped Newport staff edit, and computer process the sampled data.
