Abstract: An analysis of catch per unit of effort (CPUE) was undertaken to assess the need to stratify trawl vessels of the Oregon groundfish fleet into different vessel size or fishing power categories. Vessel size characteristics examined were overall length, horsepower and gross tons. Measures of CPUE regressed against vessel size categories were catch/day, catch/trip and catch/hour. In both 1978 and 1979 vessel size and CPUE were significantly related but just over 50% of the variance was explained by any one vessel size category. In 1978 there was a general increase in mean catch per trip with increased vessel size but confidence intervals overlapped greatly. Mean number of days fished/trip was not related to vessel size. It was concluded that classification by vessel size was not necessary. It is recommended that this type of analysis be undertaken periodically and that improvements to the fleet be documented.
