Description
- Abstract: In recent years change in Oregon's commercial fisheries and seafood industries has been rapid,
with increasing uncertainty for nearly all participants and communities involved.
Declines of certain salmon stocks with the high level of attention received often has masked the
positive aspects of many other success stories for Oregon commercial fisheries.
With that in mind, but also looking into the future, the Governor's Commercial Fishermen's
Advisory Committee at its November 10, 1994, meeting, promoted the idea of conducting a
conference to create a vision for the future of the industry.
In this document the Department has compiled basic resource information on most of Oregon's
commercial fisheries and identified emerging issues or recent management initiatives. In some
instances recreational fisheries are discussed.
Our intent has been to provide background information for conference participants to use and to
support industry discussion.
Of necessity there are fisheries not reviewed - for instance, commercial halibut. This is not
because these areas are not a priority. It is simply a matter of limited time and making the
document one of reasonable length.
We expect one result of the conference to be identification of important areas that need further
description and review of important relationships.
We hope conference participants and others find this compendium useful, and welcome any
suggestions on improvements for future similar efforts.
