Abstract: This report summarizes the activities of Ocean Salmon Management Program (OSMP) Ocean Salmon Sampling Project for the 1993 ocean season. In 1993, we collected and analyzed data on Oregon's catch and fishing effort, recovered coded-wire tags (CWTs), and gathered average weight data from commercial salmon landings. In addition, we recorded length frequencies from recreational coho landings, collected chinook scales, and took scales from coho with CWTs to maintain a reference collection of hatchery coho scales. During 1993, we surveyed several estuaries where additional salmon fisheries developed, and completed an ocean recreational salmon test fishery study at the mouth of the Columbia River. The OSMP sampling project is permanently staffed by a project leader and an assistant project leader in Newport, and one sampling coordinator at Tillamook. The sampling coordinator serves as liaison between field samplers and Newport program staff, delivers data and coded wire tags to Newport, and also samples when necessary. Ten Oregon coastal ports were sampled in 1993, utilizing 26 seasonal samplers: one was a troll sampler, 17 were recreational, and four were "combination" samplers. Four additional samplers were hired to participate in the Columbia River Control Zone test fishery. One seasonal employee helped edit and computer process the sampled data under the direction of OSMP's Data Management Project.
