Abstract: The Ocean Salmon Management Program is responsible for collecting fishery and biological data from the commercial and recreational ocean salmon fisheries, analyzing the data, and recommending appropriate management regulations for these fisheries. Management regulations are designed to achieve the optimum sustained use of the salmon resources. In FY 1988 we sampled and analyzed data on catch and fishing effort, collected average weight data from commercial landings, investigated chinook age composition, and recovered coded-wire tagged salmon caught in offshore fisheries. Other activities included evaluating a troll season extension for chinook salmon off southern Oregon, collecting coho scales from coded-wire tagged fish to maintain a reference collection of hatchery coho scales, and getting demographic data from the recreational fishery to update an economics data base. We continued the program of telephoning "key buyer" processors to estimate daily troll coho landings and we enlarged the program to monitor the chinook quotas north of Cape Falcon and south of Cape Blanco. The key buyers represented about 90% of the total area landings.
