Description
Abstract: The Ocean Salmon Management Program is responsible for collecting fishery and biological data from the commercial and recreational ocean salmon fisheries, and analyzing the data and recommending appropriate management regulations for these fisheries. Management regulations are designed to achieve the optimum sustained use of the salmon resources. In FY 1987 we sampled and analyzed data on catch and fishing effort, investigated chinook age composition, recovered marked and coded-wire tagged salmon caught in offshore fisheries, and conducted Genetic Stock Identification sampling at Newport, Coos Bay and Brookings. Short-term activities included an evaluation of a troll season extension for chinook salmon off southern Oregon, the collection of random coho scales for a Research Section scale study to identify hatchery and wild coho, and the collection of socio-economic data from the recreational fishery to update a data base. We continued the program of telephoning 11key buyer" processors to estimate daily troll coho landings north and south of Cape Falcon. We enlarged the program to monitor the chinook quotas north of Cape Falcon and south of Cape Blanco. Chinook landings were also monitored between Cape Falcon and Cape Blanco to obtain data relevant to the Klamath Management Zone. The key buyers represented about 90% of the total area landings.
