Description
Abstract: Detennination of the optimum stage at which to harvest a fish stock for either maximum poundage or dollar yield is a complex problem. Although it may be shifted by special limitations inherent to the harvest gear type such as lack of selectivity, this stage generally occurs near where the biomass of marketable-size individuals is at a maximum, i.e. where gains from recruit-· ment and growth are just being overtaken by losses from natural and fishinginduced (non-harvest) mortality. Available biomass of pink shrimp, PandaZus jordani, appears to be first a function of year-class strength, i.e. number of individuals produced and surviving, and then of growth rates. These parameters may not be independent. Growth may be related to rate of sex change from male to female which in turn affects stock fecundity. Mortality rates may be related to age or to stock size. Evaluation of these production parameters requires detailed data on stock sex, age, and size composition over time. These parameters must be compared between areas or "beds" to determine variability between areas or even if discrete stocks exist.
