Abstract: Snorkel surveys were conducted in five midcoast watersheds that included the Yachats, Alsea, Yaquina, Siletz, and Salmon Rivers. These surveys were commissioned by the Midcoast Watershed Council, using funds granted by GWEB. The intent of these surveys was to begin to develop a base line for monitoring trends in the distribution and abundance of juvenile Coho, Steelhead and Cutthroat in Midcoast watersheds. Adult Coho escapement for many of these basins has hovered near all time low levels for multiple brood cycles. These surveys intend to identify the core areas within these basins that, at low spawner densities, provide suitable spawning habitats. They also intend to identify areas important for juvenile salmonid rearing such that restoration activities can focus on recovering reaches that adult salmonids are returning to.

Purpose: The intent of these surveys was to begin to develop a base line for monitoring trends in the distribution and abundance of juvenile Coho, Steelhead and Cutthroat in Midcoast watersheds. The survey method was designed to look at a sub sample of rearing habitats using a technique that could cover large distances and succeed in describing Coho distribution and quantify the rearing densities of all salmonids for many streams and their tributaries.
