Description
Abstract: This basin is located in the north central part of the state and drains an area covering nearly 11 percent of the state. The Cascade Mountains range on the west, lava plateaus lie to the south, and the Ochoco Mountains and a large plateau border on the east. The Deschutes River proper flows some 250 miles in its journey from the south to join the Columbia River near The Dalles. Its tributary system is vast and includes several minor rivers of which all but Crooked River will be covered in this report. The basin offers some of the finest outdoor recreation opportunities in the West. Fed by melting snow and by springs emerging from lava flows in the east side of the Cascades, the river maintains a remarkably even flow of clear, cold water the year round. It is one of the top steelhead and trout streams of the country; the canyon and adjoining lands offer superb scenery and abundant game including mule deer, chukars, quail, and other upland game birds. The weather is ideal for many forms of outdoor recreation all seasons of the year. This report details a plan that we hope can be followed to solve the access problems of the Deschutes, Little Deschutes and Metolius Rivers.
