Abstract: The Grande Ronde Basin is quite a large basin that drains most of the northeastern corner of our State. The system has five tributary rivers. Two are accessible by trail only, the Wenaha near the Washington state line and the Minam that flows northward between La Grande and Enterprise. Catherine Creek drains the upper eastern part of the Grande Ronde Valley; the Wallowa and Lostine Rivers flow out of the Wallowa Valley. The Grande Ronde system supports a good fishery for salmon and steelhead. These fish migrate up the Columbia and Snake Rivers and travel approximately 650 river miles before they reach the spawning areas in the upper reaches of the basin. The Lower Grande Ronde enjoys a fall steelhead fishery; the upper tributaries have spring salmon and in some instances spring steelhead. In the peak of the season angling pressure is heavy and success is good. This report details a plan that we hope can be followed to solve the access problems of the Grande Ronde Basin.
