Description
Abstract: The Imnaha River is a main tributary to the Snake River and drains a large portion of northeastern Oregon. The river system is 80 miles long and headwaters in the most southerly corner of Wallowa County, where tall pines are carpeted beneath with lush grass and a few smaller lodgepole. This is a very beautiful area and one that is not easily forgotten if it is once visited. The river runs cold and clear in this upper area and harbors rainbow and Dolly Varden trout. Downstream near the mouth of Gumboot Creek the river enters the canyon. The canyon walls remind one of the Snake River Canyon with its high bluffs and rimrocks. The fishery is a little more diversified in this area. In addition to a summer trout fishery, steelhead and salmon are taken in spring and early summer. At the present time salmon and steelhead angling pressure is concentrated below Horse Creek, but it is anticipated that this pressure will shift upstream when High Mountain Sheep Reservoir is filled. The system has been broken into four areas, each with their individual characteristics. The following sections describe these areas more fully and each access site is described in detail.
