Abstract: Since 2002 snorkel surveys have been used to monitor juvenile steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in the Oregon portion of the Klamath Mountains Province DPS, which includes as nested regions both the South Coast stratum and the Chetco 4th Field HUC. In 2018, in order to monitor any impacts of the Chetco Bar Fire, both fish condition data was collected and annual snorkel survey efforts were increased in the Chetco 4th Field HUC. Results indicate yearly distribution and abundance estimates have been higher in the Chetco 4th Field HUC relative to the South Coast stratum and higher in the South Coast stratum relative to the DPS. Data from 2014-2018 in the Chetco 4th Field HUC and the the DPS indicate declines in distribution and abundance relative to previous years. A decline in abundance was indicated for the South Coast stratum in these years, but distribution remained relatively stable. Preliminary results from the 2018 field season did not indicate differences in fish condition or abundance between burned and un-burned watersheds in the Chetco Bar Fire burn area.

Purpose: This report presents results from Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds juvenile steelhead monitoring in the Klamath Mountains Province from 2002-2018 and preliminary data on efforts to monitor impacts of the Chetco Bar Fire collected in summer, 2018.
