Description
- Abstract: As part of the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) initiated this project in 1998 to monitor trends in the abundance and distribution of juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and juvenile steelhead (Oncorynchus mykiss) in Western Oregon streams. Snorkel surveys were used to meet this objective. Estimates of distribution and abundance for coho salmon are presented for the three coho Evolutionarily Significant Units and their component strata in Western Oregon for the years 1998-2020. Trends in distribution and abundance of coho salmon are presented for each three year interval, based on the typical coho salmon life cycle. Spawner:parr recruit plots for coho salmon are presented and discussed along with a cursory examination of results with varying pool depth criteria. Estimates of distribution and abundance for steelhead are presented for the four steelhead Distinct Population Segments in Western Oregon for the years 2002-2020. Trends in distribution and abundance of steelhead are presented for each four year interval, based on the typical steelhead life cycle.
-
- Purpose: The purpose of this report is to summarize distribution and abundance trend monitoring of Coho Salmon and steelhead juveniles in Western Oregon at the spatial scale of the stratum and ESU or DPS.
-
- Time Period of Content: 1998-2020
- Geographic Extent: Western Oregon Coho ESUs and Steelhead DPS
- Status: Final
- Use Constraints: Information in this report is based on single pass uncalibrated snorkel surveys. As such abundance estimates contained in this report are appropriate for trend monitoring, but do not indicate true abundances.
