Description
- Abstract: The primary purpose of this dataset is to identify the areas where specific inwater work timing periods apply. It is intended to provide a map representation of the waterways that are described in the document, "Oregon Guidelines for Timing of In-water Work to Protect Fish and Wildlife Resources". The guidelines are to assist the public in minimizing potential impacts to important fish, wildlife and habitat resources.
The secondary purpose of this dataset is to provide a spatial representation of the waterways where fish life stage timing information applies.
-
- Purpose: This dataset delineates where the inwater work periods apply and includes attributes that describe the specific work period dates, the primary species of concern related to inwater work and also contact information. Also associated with the inwater work areas are the background fish life stage timing "tables" that form the basis for the inwater work windows. The guidelines are based on ODFW district fish biologists’ recommendations. Primary considerations were given to important fish species including anadromous and other game fish and threatened, endangered, or sensitive species (coded list of species included in the guidelines). Time periods were established to avoid the vulnerable life stages of these fish including migration, spawning and rearing. The preferred work period applies to the listed streams, unlisted upstream tributaries, and associated reservoirs and lakes. The March 2024 guidelines document is available on the ODFW web site here: https://www.dfw.state.or.us/lands/inwater/2024%20Oregon%20In-Water%20Work%20Guidelines.pdf

- Status: Final
- Use Constraints: This dataset is intended to supplement the "Oregon Guidelines for Timing of In-water Work to Protect Fish and Wildlife Resources" document and to serve as a reference when planning for inwater work. It does not stand on it's own insofar as guiding inwater work for any waterway within the state. The boundaries in this dataset reflect the April 2023 version of the Guidelines document. Some waterway areas that are delineated in this dataset, for the purposes of providing a spatial representation of fish life stage timing information, are not described in the document, "Oregon Guidelines for Timing of In-water Work to Protect Fish and Wildlife Resources".

Data Quality Information
- Lineage-Source: The initial version a fish "timing unit" dataset was developed in 2003 to identify specific areas / waters where similar fish species life stage timing occurs. It was developed for anadromous zones only and was intended to support the application of water quality rules by the Department of Environmental Quality. The "timing units" in effect align with the inwater work areas, however the dataset has not been used for that purpose to date since it was not developed statewide.
ODFW initiated an update to the Inwater Work Period and Fish Life Stage Timing unit dataset in 2019 with an emphasis on developing boundaries for non-anadromous zones and also to update the inwater work period information. As part of a second phase update, new boundaries for existing units were considered. Many units were combined to simplify the areas represented in the dataset. Additionally, estuaries were more accurately mapped. New areas were also identified. Boundary edits were completed in April 2021 with attributes updates running through March 2023.
