The scale archive is housed at the South Willamette Watershed District office. It contains close to 2,700 scale collections representing 30 species of Oregon fishes. The earliest collections in the archive date back to 1946.
A “collection” consists of scale samples of one species from the same geographical area collected by one project or district. Collections can include just a few fish or number into the thousands. They may include scales in envelopes, scales mounted on glass slides, or scale impressions in plastic with accompanying scale gum cards.
