Description
- Abstract: Hood River, located in the north central part of the State, heads on the
north slopes of Mount Hood and flows in a northerly direction to enter the
Columbia River at the town of Hood River. The fishery of Hood River consists of two types. The main stem of Hood
River is managed primarily for anadromous fish, although there is also a light
trout fishery. The East and Middle Forks, closed to angling in the winter,
have a resident trout fishery in the spring and summer. The West Fork, at
the present time, is being managed as a rearing area for steelhead and is
closed to angling throughout the year. Although some anglers do come from
the nearby metropolitan areas, the lower river is used mainly by local anglers
during the winter fishing season. During the summer, however, the majority
of the use is by vacation anglers from around the state.
Angler access in the Hood River Basin is generally good, but needs improvement
to assure future access where it is now available by implied consent
by private landowners.
