Read just one, or read them all! Have you noticed that our online jigsaw puzzle game has a different photo and puzzle piece type? The game is updated at least once a month, so if you haven't played it in a while, check it out! November 2002 New Zealand Mud Snails have shown up in Garrison Lake on Oregon's south coast, which signals a need to provide people with protocols for preventing the spread of this highly invasive critter. See our recently updated Tips page for a link to where you can find information on how to protect the waters you visit from this harmful aquatic hitchhiker. The monthly feature for November is an article titled, A New Interactive Website To Help You Find Fishable Waters. The article highlights the upcoming Oregon Fish Finder site, and how it can help you decide where to fish, and which species of fish you are most likely to catch there. Read the article to learn more... The Fish Sightings GIS Data page has been updated and now includes fish observation data as well. The re-titled Fish Observations/Sightings GIS Data page now includes fish observation coverages, shapefiles and pictures for several species. ODFW reminds hunters about how to be safe in the woods. A link to this important advisory can be found our Tips page. We have added a new Reference Information page to our site. This page contains a table of the references that served as data resources in the development of our fish barrier, dam, fish distribution, and fish observations databases. October 2002 This month our feature is the identification of ten Oregon mammals by the tracks they leave behind. Whether you are an outdoor novice or an expert tracker, click here to see if you can match up each set of tracks with the correct animal! If you are going on a backpacking trip or out hunting in the woods this fall, you should always take a map with you. Check out our Map Links page for FREE online sources of topographic maps, trail maps, charts and more. Are you are interested in GIS data related to Oregon dams or fish barriers? September 2002 Did you know that last year biologists and volunteers distributed 38,239 hatchery salmon and steelhead carcasses in over 664.2 miles of Oregon streams? Read about ODFW's Carcass Placement Program and its environmental benefits in our September Monthly Feature article. Are you looking for a map to take on your hunting, fishing or hiking trip? We have discovered a University of Washington web site with salmon spawning photos and videos that are so good, we've added a whole new page to our site featuring links to those items. See our new Fish Images Links page for further details. August 2002 Before you head out to enjoy any of Oregon's numerous outdoor activities this month, be prepared! Follow our fire and drought information links to get important information. ODFW has put together some tips for anglers, hunters, and outdoor recreationalists. There is also a link to a BLM map of the large fires currently burning in Oregon and Washington. We have 2001-2002 hatchery fish carcass placement information available from our Data Resources page. Look for the new Fish Information category called Carcass Placement. There are links to both an html (Web) version and an xls (Microsoft Excel) version. There is a new section on our Tips page called Tips for Home, where you can find out how to enjoy your wildlife neighbors, and deal with troublesome ones. Our Monthly Feature for August is a Jigsaw Puzzle Game. Take a break and try it out! We have added a link to the Oregon State Library on our Library page. The library is a FREE and valuable resource for Oregon state government employees. A link to StreamNet's Interactive Mapping Applications has been added to our Data Resources Map pages. StreamNet mapping applications allow you to view fisheries information for the Pacific Northwest and Columbia Basin through an interactive map interface. These applications may be helpful in showing a graphic representation of the area you are interested in, making your own maps, or accessing StreamNet data by the geographic features that they are related to. July 2002 Since March 2001, our Program has been surveying internet users who download spatial fish distribution data at the 1:100,000 and 1:24,000 scales. Our Monthly Feature for July, written by Jennifer Lloyd, is an article summarizing the results of these surveys. Read the article to find out how the data is being used, and where you can find it. Looking for a wildlife, plant, or landscape photo to use in your presentation or report? Go to our Tips page to find out where you can download a high-quality, copyright-free image at no cost. On June 26, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced, "Coastal Cutthroat Trout Population Does Not Need ESA Protection" in an official News Release. Read the News Release for further details.
